Conakry: At least thirty people lost their lives in the capital of Guinea, Conakry, when a landfill collapsed onto nearby homes in the early hours of the morning, following heavy rains. The tragic incident occurred in the Bbessia district's Dar-es-salam neighborhood, situated on the outskirts of the city, as confirmed by a government statement.According to TRTworld.com, the collapse happened at approximately 2:00 am (0200 GMT), resulting in six others sustaining serious injuries. The government has mobilized significant resources to search for those who might still be buried, rescue the survivors, and recover the bodies. Prime Minister Amadou Oury Bah visited the site, observing the ongoing search-and-rescue operations being conducted with the help of excavators, amidst a gathering of concerned onlookers.The government has assured that medical care will be provided to the injured and assistance will be offered to those affected by this unfortunate event. Local leader Lancine Sylla had earlier expressed co ncerns about the potential high death toll, revealing that 18 bodies had already been recovered and taken to the morgue.Exiled former prime minister and opposition figure, Cellou Dalein Diallo, described the incident as a tragedy that has deeply saddened the nation. He highlighted the worrying aspect of the tragedy, noting that the landfill was scheduled for closure on August 23. Diallo called for a transparent investigation by the authorities to determine the circumstances that led to the disaster and to ensure accountability.In the days leading up to the collapse, the government had issued eviction orders to those living around the landfill due to concerns of an impending collapse. Guinea is currently under the leadership of General Mamadi Doumbouya, who assumed power following a coup in 2021 and was later elected president in December 2025.
