Dubai: Nurse Naomi Oyoe Ohene Oti from Ghana, an Oncology Nurse Specialist and Head of Nursing at the National Radiotherapy Oncology and Nuclear Medicine Centre, Korle-Bu Teaching Hospital, has been announced as the winner of the Aster Guardians Global Nursing Award 2025. She received the prestigious USD 250,000 prize at a ceremony held in Dubai, UAE. The award was presented by His Excellency Sheikh Nahyan bin Mabarak Al Nahyan, UAE’s Cabinet Member and Minister of Tolerance and Coexistence, in the presence of Dr. Azad Moopen, Founder Chairman of Aster DM Healthcare, alongside other distinguished guests.
According to African Press Organization, the award ceremony highlighted the importance of the nursing profession and the UAE’s commitment to healthcare excellence. The late Sheikh Zayed bin Sultan Al Nahyan envisioned a healthcare system built on human dignity, a vision that continues under the leadership of His Highness Sheikh Mohamed bin Zayed Al Nahyan, President of the UAE. The award aims to honor those
who protect lives and care for others with devotion and dignity.
Commenting on her win, Naomi Ohene Oti expressed gratitude, noting that the recognition belongs to every nurse across Ghana, Africa, and the world. She has dedicated over two decades to addressing inequities in cancer care through training and outreach. This award will help amplify efforts to scale training and inspire future generations of oncology nurses in Africa.
Naomi Ohene Oti has transformed patient care and pioneered specialist nurse training programs. Her initiatives in partnership with international centers like the Cross Cancer Institute in Canada have significantly improved oncology education and patient outcomes in Ghana. Under her leadership, over 60 oncology nurse specialists and 10 breast care nurses have been trained, expanding specialized care services nationwide.
Her influence extends across Africa as she participates in significant initiatives and committees, advocating for culturally relevant care in cancer nursing. She h
as received numerous national honors, including Ghana’s Ministry of Health Excellence Award and the Dr. Dorcia Kisseh International Award.
Dr. Azad Moopen praised Naomi Ohene Oti for redefining nursing, highlighting her as an innovator and leader whose contributions uplift the healthcare ecosystem. The other nine finalists were also recognized for their contributions, selected through a rigorous review process by Ernst and Young LLP, the Screening-Jury, and the Grand Jury. These nurses from different countries exemplify extraordinary dedication and compassion in their work, setting a high standard in the healthcare field.
