Dakar: The General Assembly today adopted two significant resolutions addressing the Occupied Palestinian Territory and the occupied Syrian Golan.
According to EMM, the first resolution, ‘Peaceful settlement of the question of Palestine’ (document A/80/L.16), was passed with a recorded vote of 151 in favour, 11 against, and 11 abstentions. This resolution emphasizes the urgent need for collective efforts to initiate credible negotiations on all final status issues concerning the Middle East peace process. It also calls for the timely organization of an international conference in Moscow, as envisaged by Security Council resolution 1850 (2008), to push forward a comprehensive peace settlement.
The resolution demands that Israel adhere to its obligations under international law by ending its unlawful presence in the Occupied Palestinian Territory, ceasing new settlement activities, and evacuating settlers. It also rejects attempts at demographic or territorial changes in Gaza and stresses the importance of unifying the Strip with the West Bank under the Palestinian Authority. Additionally, it calls for Israel’s withdrawal from Palestinian territories occupied since 1967, the realization of the Palestinian people’s rights, particularly the right to self-determination, and a just resolution for Palestinian refugees.
The second resolution, ‘The Syrian Golan’ (document A/80/L.12), was approved by a recorded vote of 123 in favour, 7 against, and 41 abstentions. This resolution declares Israel’s 1981 decision to impose its laws on the occupied Syrian Golan as null and void, calling for its rescission. It urges Israel to resume talks on the Syrian and Lebanese tracks and to respect previous commitments. Furthermore, it demands Israel’s withdrawal from the occupied Syrian Golan to the pre-1967 borders.
