Dr. Rasha Kelej of Merck Foundation Uses Art and Fashion to Tackle Infertility Stigma and Promote Girl Education

Lusaka: Merck Foundation, the philanthropic arm of Merck KGaA Germany, celebrated World Art Day 2026 by highlighting its Pan-African Art and Fashion with Purpose community, a platform founded by Dr. Rasha Kelej, CEO of Merck Foundation. This event coincided with the 6-year anniversary of the community, which utilizes art and fashion to address significant health and social challenges across Africa.According to African Press Organization, Senator Dr. Rasha Kelej, a prominent figure recognized as one of the 100 Most Influential Africans from 2019 to 2025, emphasized the role of art, fashion, and media in raising awareness about crucial social issues. Under her leadership, the Fashion and Art with Purpose Community has been instrumental in addressing topics such as infertility stigma, girl education, FGM, child marriage, gender-based violence, women empowerment, and awareness of diseases like diabetes, hypertension, and cancer. The community has attracted talent from over 25 countries, fostering a collaborativ e environment to drive cultural change through creative endeavors.Merck Foundation has initiated several programs, including "Our Africa by Merck Foundation," a pan-African TV program led by Dr. Kelej. This initiative brings together African fashion designers, singers, and experts to spotlight pressing issues, reaching millions of viewers across Africa. The program is available on various social media platforms, further expanding its reach and impact.In collaboration with the First Ladies of Africa, Merck Foundation annually announces eight awards under two categories, focusing on breaking infertility stigma, supporting girl education, ending child marriage, FGM, gender-based violence, and promoting a healthy lifestyle. The awards recognize the contributions of media, fashion designers, filmmakers, musicians, and young African talents.Since its inception, the foundation has celebrated 175 winners from 25 countries, acknowledging their creativity and impact in addressing social issues. These winners have joined the Fashion and Art with Purpose Community, using their skills to challenge perceptions and raise awareness.Additionally, Merck Foundation has produced over 30 songs and launched nine children's storybooks and six awareness animation films in multiple languages.
