30 Fatalities as Landslide Hits Rubbish Tip in Guinea

Conakry: At least 30 individuals have lost their lives following a landslide at a rubbish tip in Guinea, West Africa. The incident was reported by the German Press Agency (dpa).According to Nam News Network, the landslide occurred in the early hours of Sunday after heavy rainfall, leading to the rubbish heap collapsing and burying several houses in a suburb of the capital, Conakry. Authorities confirmed that at least 22 others sustained injuries, with six individuals reported to be in serious condition.Rescue teams have been deployed to the site, and operations are ongoing. Prime Minister Amadou Oury Bah visited the disaster location, offering condolences on behalf of the government to those affected by the tragedy.Local media highlighted that the government had plans to secure and clear the large rubbish tip in the Dar-es-salam district, a notably impoverished area of Conakry, in the weeks leading up to the incident. The site had previously experienced a landslide in 2017, resulting in nine fatalities.Despite possessing significant natural resources, Guinea remains among the world's poorest nations. The country, with a population of approximately 15 million, is a leading exporter of bauxite, the key raw material for aluminum production. Nonetheless, a large portion of the population lacks sufficient access to essential services such as healthcare, education, electricity, and clean water.
